December Reflections

Santa 2012

The holiday’s have been busy for Friend For Life volunteers.  We managed to have three successful weekends taking Santa photo’s all around the Frederick metro area (okay so its more of the DC metro area, but we are Frederick based), have sold numerous cat ornaments, and had quite a few adoptions.  A big shout out of thanks to everyone who helped with any or all of these events, and as always a big thank you to all of our fosters and volunteers to help keep the cats in homes, at the sanctuary, and at Petco happy and healthy.

For all the ups that we’ve had this month- we’ve also had some downs.  Today we remember some of the cats at our sanctuary that have crossed over the rainbow bridge, as well as some of the cats that live with our volunteers.  Its always hard to loose a friend- feline or otherwise.  These cats lead wonderful lives in the comforts of the homes that our volunteers have given them.

As a volunteer who helps with adoptions at Petco, the first three weekends in December were extremely rewarding as I got to see cat after cat, kitten after kitten, go into their forever homes.  Being able to see these cats – some very shy, some very out going, and some adults in bonded pairs- is one of those experiences that brings the warmth of the holiday season alive.   Like any rescue, we have our good weekends, and our slow weekends, but to see 6 cats go into homes in one weekend- or a pair of return cats not even last three days in Petco before finding a new home, really makes all of this worth while.

When you think about the new year ahead- I challenge all of you to to find something rewarding.  It doesn’t matter what it is, or who its with, but go out there and find something that brings a smile to your face that you can reflect upon.  Volunteering with FFL was the best decision for me to do in 2012, and I look forward to continuing in 2013.

Happy New Year everyone,

Kendra
